How It Works

Data Sources

Disposal rules are compiled from US EPA guidelines, EU Waste Framework Directive, and major municipal recycling programs (NYC, LA, London, Toronto, Sydney). The database covers over 150 common household items across paper, plastic, glass, metal, organics, electronics, and hazardous materials.

The "Check Local" Category

Many materials (like pizza boxes, black plastic trays, and small electronics) have conflicting rules across municipalities. Items flagged "Check Local" are accepted in some programs but rejected in others. Always verify with your local waste authority before disposing of these items.

Golden Rules of Recycling
  • When in doubt, throw it out. Contamination from non-recyclables can ruin an entire batch.
  • Empty, clean, and dry. Residual food or liquid contaminates recyclables.
  • No plastic bags in curbside bins - return them to grocery store drop-offs.
  • Flatten cardboard to save space and prevent bin jams.
  • Remove caps from bottles unless your program specifies otherwise.
Disclaimer: Recycling rules change frequently and vary by municipality. This guide provides general guidance. Always confirm current rules with your local waste management provider.
